When winter is coming, many of us take specific steps to winterize our homes and cars to get ready for the coming season. Depending on where you live, you may need to change your oil and antifreeze in your car and make sure your pipes are well-insulated in your home so they don’t burst. But it’s important to weatherize yourself as well, and your hands can really experience the effects of winter. So it’s important to know how to take care of your hands in the winter. Particularly if you’re already prone to dry skin.

Take care of your hands in the winter

I’m a bit of a beauty product addict, so I’m always on the lookout for fun new things to try. Since I dabble a lot, I wanted to share with you some tips and tricks to help take care of your hands. Having smooth hands in the winter can be a bit more work than other times of the year, but with the right regimen, it doesn’t have to be a chore to take care of your hands.

So let’s dive into some fun items that a lot of beauty addicts like to have on hand. You may find something to pamper yourself or to give as a gift to another beauty aficionado. Even if you aren’t a beauty product junkie like me, you’ll probably find some useful tips for your skin care regimen.

Beauty addicts take care of their hands

One of the first signs of aging is often displayed on your hands. Sun spots, dry skin, and skin that doesn’t look as plump as it used to can make you feel like you look older than you are. Taking great care of your hands means:

  • using sunscreen on them to protect them from sun damage,
  • moisturizing them regularly,
  • taking care of your nails and cuticles,
  • using a humidifier if the air is really dry,
  • and using specialty treatments like masks and serums. When I use my night cream and serum, I even use a little of that on my hands to use up the product on my fingertips.

That sounds like a lot of work, but it’s really not, and boy, does it feel good to take care of your hands. I’m diabetic, so if I don’t take care of my hands, they will feel like sandpaper in just a few days. I have to be especially careful with preventing hangnails and skin that splits open on my knuckles. So here’s a few of my favorites to keep my hands looking and feeling great.

Jamberry Indulgence Hand Care Set review

Photo of Jamberry's Indulgence Hand Care Set

Infused with Argan and Hemp seed oils and shea butter, you know that Jamberry’s Indulgence Hand Care Set is going to be the good stuff. And this set makes it so easy to take good care of your hands. I like things that are easy. Add a cuticle oil, and voila! You’ve got everything you need to have soft, smooth, young-looking hands.

The kit features its signature cleanser called, guess what, Cleanse. It is always a good idea to begin any hand care treatment with clean hands. Whether your shaping your nails, treating your cuticles, hydrating your hands or getting ready to do your nails, your hands and nails need to be nice and clean. And Cleanse does a great job of that with a light, delicate fragrance too!

After you have cleansed your hands, you’ll enjoy using Jamberry’s Buff exfoliator. Dry skin be gone. Seriously. This is my favorite product in the kit because its just right for hands. I find that using exfoliators for my face are a bit too gentle for my hands, and the ones for my body are a little too rough, so Buff gets it just right.

Then you need to hydrate your skin, nails and cuticles. Jamberry’s Indulgence Hand Care Set offers you two options for this. The first is their hand cream called Nourish. The second is a balm called Quench. Their names are apt. Nourish does a great job at putting moisture back into your skin. It’s perfect for regular use and when your hands are in good condition, this is really all you need.

BUT if you’re dry, bring on the Quench. Quench seals in that hydration with a balm. It locks it in there so that your moisturizing crème doesn’t evaporate or rub off.  It’s non-greasy which is great for beauty addicts on the go. In fact, it’s packaged like a glue stick, so it’s perfect for carrying in your purse since it can’t leak if the lid opens.

Helpful hints about how to buy Jamberry’s Indulgence Hand Care Set

Pro Tip- Each of these products are available individually, but if you get them as the set, you save $15.

We’re giving away one of the Indulgence Hand Care Sets from Jamberry. Be sure to make it to the bottom of the post to find out how to enter.

Jamberry also has an Indulgence Foot Care Set too that I talk about in my post on how to enjoy being cozy, or hygge as the Danish call it. I get my Jamberry products from my friend Kristen Koons.  She also has a special discount program called Style VIP where you can save 15% on every regularly priced purchase. I have my eye on this lip manicure set myself. (See, I told you I was a beauty addict.) It’s like my Pokemon, gotta get em all!

Tips to make your manicure last longer

Photo of woman's hand writing with text: how to take care of your hands this winter with tips for how to get a long-lasting manicure

Since we’re on the subject of how to take care of your hands, let’s talk about how to keep your manicure in tip-top shape. Whether you head to the salon or do your nails yourself, it’s nice to add a few extra days to your manicure.

I turned to manicurist to the stars, Skyy Hadley of As U Wish Salon, for her tips on how to make a manicure last longer. Here’s what Skyy recommends:

  • Remove your polish and let your nails breathe for a good few days. If your nails look discolored, squeeze some lemon into your lotion or rub a lemon wedge directly onto the nail to brighten your nails.
  • Keep your hands well-moisturized with a shea butter lotion. (I like Nourish and Quench. Both of these contain shea butter.)
  • Then apply a cuticle oil to the base of your nails or even when they are already polished. Focus around the cuticle area to hydrate and bring moisture into the skin, helping the polish last longer.

As you can see, keeping your hands well-hydrated has benefits. Skyy has generously provided some more of her tips on how to have a beautiful manicure in our post about selecting the how to get a beautiful manicure for your wedding.

Skyy knows her stuff! But why wouldn’t she? She only does nails for ladies like Mariska Hargitay, Faith Evans, Liv Tyler, Uma Thurman and Janelle Monae.

Don’t forget the gloves!

If it’s cold where you live, you need some great gloves for outside use, but inside gloves are nice too. Especially when they are nice and cozy and do a great job at helping to heal dry skin. If you get super-duper dry skin like I do, slathering on a great cream and then putting on a pair of these gloves makes my hands feel so wonderful.

Truth be told, I like a few different kind of these gloves, and some of them depend on the weather. In the summer, I like simple cotton ones, but when it’s cold, I like the ones that are fuzzy, and I even like the ones that are gel lined as they really hold in the moisture.

And don’t forget your feet! I stumbled across these socks the other day, and I just have to share them with you.  Oh my gosh, I had such a laugh! I honestly don’t know if these socks feel good or not since I don’t actually have these socks. But if you don’t mind to tell my Secret Santa about these, I’d be ever so grateful to find out and give you the scoop!

Other helpful things to take care of your hands this winter

One of the things I mentioned earlier is that when I’m caring for my face, I like to massage any face serums and creams into the tops of my hands. It’s just a little habit of mine that takes only a quick moment, and I feel like I’m not wasting my face cream if I accidentally get too much. That’s not enough to replace a hand care regimen like the Indulgence Hand Care Set provides, but it’s a quick little addition you can make to your routine to take care of your skin.

I am a big fan of using products from Kneipp, and I think you may like their face creams too. Both my face and hands love them. This is one of my favorites.

I mentioned that if the air is particularly dry at your home, you may want to consider a humidifier. My skin is so much clearer when I use my humidifier. My face is brighter, my pores stay clear more easily, and my hands love it! It really helps me to avoid dry, cracked skin. I use one that is designed to take care of my whole house, but some people prefer one just in their bedroom.

Pro tip – if you also have a lot of sinus issues in the winter, a humidifier helps with that too.

It’s not the most beautiful thing, but tucked away in a corner, a good humidifier is a true work horse for your skin’s needs in the winter time.

I hate when my hands get dried and cracked during the winter time. I try to use Eucerin Cream my mom has said that works really good on dry skin and during the rough winter times.

I have eczema on my hands so they easily crack. I try my best to keep them as moisturized as possible but you can only do so much. It gets even worse in the winter. Thanks for all the tips!!!

I am going to use your tips and product suggestions this cold season to help to keep my fingertips and knuckles from drying out and cracking and bleeding. They are so sore when that happens. I have just started using a nail better and/or oil at night to see if they help but it hasn’t been long enough to know yet.

My poor hands. I don’t moisturize nearly enough to keep them from getting dry in the winter. I need some really good lotion like this to throw in my purse and take everywhere.
