Ingredients you need to make the Patriotic Pretzel Rods
- Pretzel rods
- White candy melts or vanilla-flavored almond bark
- Red candy melts
- Blue candy melts
- Assorted sprinkles (stars and silver sprinkling sugar), if desired
How to make Red, White, and Blue Patriotic Pretzel Rods
Basic instructions
- Melt the candy coating according to package directions giving special care not to overheat the candy. If the candy coating is overheated, it will be too thick. You can add 2 teaspoons of vegetable shortening or coconut oil to help thin the candy but do not add any other type of liquid as the candy will seize and harden.
- Pour candy coating over two-thirds of the pretzel rod and shake gently to remove excess. If applying sprinkles, do so immediately rotating the pretzel rods to coat all sides. Larger sprinkles work best if placed individually.
- Place pretzel rod on waxed paper or cooling rack. (Cook’s notes: Waxed paper makes for easier release.)
- If dipping with additional colored candy melts, allow initial candy coating to set completely. Then, use a spoon or fork to drizzle candy coating over the pretzel rods. Before the pretzel sets, gently pick it up and move to clean wax paper.
- If you’re using sprinkles, be sure to sprinkle them on in your desired pattern before the candy dries.
- Let pretzel rods dry completely before packaging or serving.
How to Decorate the American Flag Pretzel Rods
- Melt the white candy coating as instructed above.
- Pour candy coating over two-thirds of the pretzel rod and shake gently to remove excess. Place on waxed paper to dry completely.
- Melt the blue candy coating and dip the end of the white-coated pretzel into the melted candy. Immediately place star sprinkles while the candy is wet using sterilized tweezers and/or a toothpick. Place on waxed paper.
- Melt the red candy coating and transfer to a piping bag or freezer bag with the corner snipped. Drag lines of red across the white field on the pretzels.
- Let pretzel rods dry completely before packaging or serving.
How to Decorate Solid Color Pretzel Rods
Simply follow steps 1-2 for the basic instructions, and then stop. Be sure to use blue candy melts with blue sprinkles, etc.
How to Decorate Striped, or French Flag, Pretzel Rods
If you are making striped pretzel rods to look like bunting or the French Flag, start with white candy melts and then roll in sprinkles in the design you want. I like to pour the sprinkles in the design on a plate or waxed paper so that I only have to roll the pretzels one time.
Note: Store in an airtight container at room temperature. Placing in the refrigerator may cause the pretzels to soften.
