A milkshake in a patriotic glass on a tray with m&ms, paper straws, and a patriotic napkin.
This boozy milkshake is perfectly on theme for your Fourth of July parties and anytime you want to enjoy a little red, white, and blue. But you can easily switch up the M&Ms to serve it for any holiday or occasion.

This scrumptious M&M Concrete is a great ice cream shake recipe for adults and kids (if you leave out the alcohol) alike.

It is easy to add the chocolate liqueur and white rum – or to leave it out.

Making this delicious treat one you can share with all the people you love.

So what is a concrete anyway?

Thick enough to eat with a spoon, this blended ice cream treat chocolate, cocoa, and cream, with a nice boozy edge.

If you’ve ever had a blizzard milkshake, you know what a concrete is.

It’s a milkshake so thick, you can actually turn it completely upside down without losing a drop.

If you love ice cream, this is the boozy beverage you need in your life this summer.

Serving suggestions

The M&M Concrete dresses up nicely for every occasion.

M&Ms come in so many beautiful colors, you can pick and choose the colors you need.

For a 4th of July milkshake you’ll be proud to serve at your next barbecue, USA M&Ms come in red, white, and blue.

Talk about a beautiful and tasty treat to enjoy while watching the fireworks!

And since you can find M&Ms for just about any holiday, you can make this concrete recipe with the red and green ones for Christmas.

You can use the red and pink M&Ms for Valentine’s Day.

Or use the pastel M&Ms for Easter.

There’s even Halloween themed M&Ms…

I’m starting to sound like Forrest Gump talking about shrimp.

But you get the idea.

From patriotic milkshakes to Christmas candy blizzards, this recipe has you covered.

If there’s an occasion where M&Ms have a theme, you can make a celebratory concrete shake to indulge!

You can even top it with all kinds of fun candy garnishes to make it a freak shake!

What’s the difference between a concrete and a milkshake?

Basically, a concrete is a type of milkshake that’s super duper thick.

It’s thick enough that when you turn it upside down, it will hold a spoon in it.

It gets it’s name because it’s so thick, like construction concrete.

In fact, a lot of restaurants like to do that trick for you when they serve it.

It makes for a really nice, dramatic presentation.

A concrete is typically blended with candy, fruit, and or nuts too.

They are typically made with ice cream or frozen custard.

So is a concrete the same thing as a blizzard?

If you’re talking about restaurant recipes, some places call their super thick milkshakes with lots of mix-ins a blizzard milkshake instead of a concrete.

Sometimes there’s a difference in the recipe – like using frozen custard vs using ice cream.

But oftentimes, people use the terms interchangeably.

We often see these differences regionally too.

So if you’re making a thick M&M milkshake at home, you can call it a concrete or a blizzard.

A milkshake in a glass with stars on it topped with whipped cream and sprinkles.
Adding some sprinkles to the whipped cream is always a fun way to dress up your favorite shake.

Ingredients:

  • Vanilla Ice Cream
  • Chocolate Syrup
  • White Chocolate Coffee Creamer
  • Red, White, and Blue M&Ms
  • Godiva Chocolate Liqueur
  • White Rum
  • Whipped Cream

To make this recipe, you will also need a blender, a measuring cup or jigger, an ice cream scoop, and a tall beverage glass.

You may use short beverage glasses if you want to halve the portion size.

Substitutions for the Godiva Chocolate Liqueur

If you don’t have Godiva Chocolate Liqueur on-hand, there are a few things you may substitute that will work.

Some options are: creme de cacao, Baileys Chocolate Cherry, Patron XO Cafe Dark Cocoa, Dorda Double Chocolate Liqueur, Bottega Nero Cioccolato Gianduia (especially if you love Nutella and hazelnut flavors), and Sheelin White Chocolate Irish Creme.

There are several others as well as reliable store brands too that you can use.

You can even get creative.

Like if you’re using Christmas themed M&M’s you may want to try a chocolate peppermint liqueur.

Can I serve this concrete recipe without alcohol?

Yes, you may absolutely serve this milkshake without alcohol.

To do so, omit the rum and Godiva Chocolate liqueur.

You’ll be omitting 2 ounces of liquid.

What I recommend doing is when you get to the step prior to adding the liquor, test the consistency.

If the shake is already nice and thick, you may be satisfied the way it is.

But if it is too thick, you may want to add a bit more creamer.

If you do this, I would add 1 tsp at a time.

Then blend again until you feel that it’s just right.

How to make a frozen concrete with ice cream

Begin by measuring your ingredients.

If you have trouble scooping the ice cream, rum the ice cream scoop under warm water to help it scoop out of the container.

Then open up your blender and add the ice cream, coffee creamer, chocolate syrup and M&Ms.

Put the lid on the blender.

Turn the mixer to the high setting and blend for 1 minute.

When the blender has stopped, remove the lid.

Pour the Godiva Chocolate Liqueur and white rum into the blender.

Close the lid.

Mix it again for another minute or until you’ve reached the desired thickness.

Depending on your blender, you may need more or less time.

Pour the concrete mixture into your beverage glass.

Top with whipped cream and some more M&Ms if you wish.

Grab a spoon or a big fat straw and enjoy!
