The legend of King Arthur, Camelot, and the Knights of the Round Table has always been one of my favorite stories. My name, Jennifer, is derived from the Welsh name, Guinevere. I’ve often wondered if my name led me to love the legend. Or did the legend lead me to love my name?
Some of my favorite books and movies about King Arthur
If there’s a book, movie, or tv show about the legend, there’s a good chance I have read or seen it. I’ve probably read or seen over 100 books and movies about the story, and it never gets old. Some of my favorites are:
- The Mists of Avalon,
- The Idylls of the King,
- The Once and Future King,
- Le Mort d’Arthur,
- Guenevere Queen of the Summer Country (and the following series),
- First Knight,
- and even Guinevere, Laurel Phelan’s book about her claims that she was Guinevere in a past life.
Some of these I have read or viewed repeatedly. I’ve lost count as to how many times I’ve seen the mini series based on The Mists of Avalon.
I loved traveling around Wales bringing much of the story, and my imagination, to life.
I absolutely love the story. So naturally, I’ve wanted to visit several sites related to the legend during my travels. I’ve visited several places in England, Wales and Ireland rumored to be part of the story. Some of my favorite places to visit have been in Wales.
I spent a week traveling around the Welsh countryside with some friends to tramp around some of the sites related to the story. The time we spent there was truly magical. The countryside was lush, the lakes were moody, and the ruins were majestic.
We stayed in a little town called Mold where I had briefly visited on a earlier trip. Mold is conveniently in the Alyn Valley and is a great jumping off point for road trips to other places in the region. The people were extraordinarily friendly, and when they learned the purpose of our trip, they were happy to fill us in on the local versions of the stories.
We visited many sites related exclusively to the legend, and many more. My time in Wales was wonderful. If you have an opportunity to visit the Welsh countryside, I highly recommend it.

I recently gave an interview with Pink Pangea about my trip to Wales. You can read more about it there as well as find out my tips on how to prepare if you plan to visit as well. My favorite tip? Look up videos on YouTube to find out how to pronounce the names of the places you are visiting and practice saying them before you arrive.
